What is S/MIME

The certificate is attached to each email, not to the server.

S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is the standard for email signing and encryption defined in RFC 8551. The certificate is issued to a specific email address and installed in the user's email client, so the signature travels with each message rather than sitting at the server layer.

Recipients see the authentication mark directly in Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird: the message really was sent from that address and its content was not altered in transit. With encryption enabled, only a recipient holding the key can read the content.

Technical standards

FAQ

What to know before deploying S/MIME.

How does S/MIME differ from sending ordinary email?

An ordinary email is like a postcard: its contents can be read or forged in transit. S/MIME adds a digital signature and encryption so the recipient can verify the sender, while giving the email's contents stronger protection.

Can I use S/MIME on a mobile phone, in Outlook or in Gmail?

Yes. S/MIME is supported by common email clients such as Outlook and Apple Mail, and in Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 environments when configured correctly.

Why does a business need S/MIME when it already has a firewall and spam filtering?

Firewalls and spam filters protect at the system layer, while S/MIME protects each individual email through sender authentication and content encryption. The two security layers complement each other.

If I send a digitally signed email to someone without an S/MIME certificate, can they still read it?

Recipients can still read digitally signed email. Encrypted email requires the recipient to hold a matching certificate or key to decrypt the content.
