What VMC, CMC and BIMI are
A logo appearing in the inbox is the result of three things working together.
BIMI is the standard that allows a brand logo to be displayed next to email in Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Apple Mail. To enable it, the domain must publish a BIMI record in DNS pointing to a logo file in SVG Tiny PS format, together with a certificate attesting that the logo is yours.
That certificate has two types. VMC (Verified Mark Certificate) issued for a logo with a registered trademark at a recognized intellectual property office. CMC (Common Mark Certificate) for a logo not yet trademark-registered but already in real use by the business — narrower in scope than VMC.
Prerequisite before applying for the certificate: the domain already has SPF, DKIM and DMARC at enforcement level p=quarantine or p=reject. Without DMARC in place the logo will not display, even with a certificate.
