According to a source at an Internet service provider in Vietnam, on June 29 the operator of the Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) submarine cable restored normal operation on the S7 branch, which links Vietnam with Hong Kong (China) and Japan.
This is the third branch of the APG cable to fail in the past six months, after earlier faults on branches S6 and S9, affecting Vietnam's international Internet connection speeds.
However, according to the latest announcement from the APG consortium, a further fault has occurred on branch S1.7, which links Vietnam to Singapore. The fault has reduced the cable's bandwidth to roughly 50%, slowing international Internet connectivity.
The cause and the repair timeline have not yet been disclosed.
Vietnam currently has 5 international submarine fiber-optic cable routes: AAG (Asia–America); APG (Asia–Pacific); SMW-3 (Southeast Asia–Middle East–Western Europe); IA (Intra Asia); and AAE-1 (Asia–Africa–Europe). There is also a smaller cable route, TVH, connecting Thailand, Vietnam, and Hong Kong (China).
In addition to the submarine fiber-optic cables, Vietnam also has several terrestrial fiber-optic routes providing international connectivity. However, most of Vietnam’s international Internet traffic depends on the submarine cable routes.
